Dear Dr. Laura:

It's up to us, as parents, to equip our children to move forward in life on their own when it's time.  Whether we equip them as our parents did us, or we do it in a very different way, we have to remember that our children are tuned into everything we do and say.

My parents didn't teach me enough, so I'm doing things differently with my two daughters.  My husband and I are showing them responsibility, how to deal with finances, how to stand up for themselves, and how to communicate effectively.  We're hoping that with the foundation we're giving them, they'll grow up to be community-minded, caring adults, but ones who can take care of themselves too.
