In 1964, I graduated high school and loved cars. I took a job in Chicago at a service station, so I could learn more about being a mechanic. I also took a night course or two at the local Junior College.
My work week was Monday through Saturday, 7am until 6pm. That was 66 hours per week. My gap year taught me that I should pursue going to a university!
I would encourage a gap year, only if the young person has to literally "work their butt off" at a job where they could potentially land, if they do not carry on with their education.
