October 6, 2015Let Them Have Recess
I saw lots of comments and an email of the day from your listeners about Elementary School recess - and the lack thereof in many cases!
I am proud to say that my children's school provides 3 breaks per day! Two of the recess periods are 10 minutes each. The kids get one break in the morning, and one in the afternoon. The last break is lunch and is just shy of 20 minutes long. This year, the lunch recess schedule has been flipped, for the best interest of the children. Kids get to run around and play for their recess FIRST, and then they walk to the cafeteria to eat their lunch for 15-20 minutes. No more kids that don't want to eat! Lots of hydration happening during lunch. They have even put two big sports coolers of water in the cafeteria. The kids are more attentive in class for the afternoon and they're getting exercise that they would probably not get otherwise.
Just had to share. Some schools ARE doing the right thing!!!
